Supporting an Adoption
Published in Paperback by Our Child Press (September, 1986)
Average review score:

Every adoptive family should have 2 copies of this book. This short, readable book gets straight to the point: Friends and Family often undermine adoptive parents' authority and parental role during the adjustment and attachment process. This causes immediate and long-term problems when we are building an attachment with children who have special attachment needs. This book explains what family and friends should expect during an adoption, how they can help, and how they can stay out of the way when there are problems. It explains some of the health, emotional and behavioral issues that are common to newly adopted children which are different from usual childrearing concerns. Adopted children need prepared and well-supported parents -- it is their most important special need. We NEED for our friends and family to understand what to expect, and this short book is perfect to help get the message through to those who may try to dismiss our concerns at a time when we need their understanding the most. I recommend this book to everyone who knows an adoptive family. I often tell my new adoptive-parent friends to buy 2 or 3 copies, one to keep and the others to hand out when needed. (I didn't get paid to say that, really!)

Swedish: A Comprehensive Grammar (Routledge Comprehensive Grammars)
Published in Paperback by Routledge (December, 2003)
Average review score:

Excellent bookI would describe it as "skit bra" infact. My need for learning Swedish is based on my living and working here. It's a big book but well worth the effort. Very well written and all the linguistic terms that you may be unfamiliar with are explained in a glossary. I needed a good thorough text on the subject and I think I made a good choice. I would like to see more of the style guidelines/diktats such as those found in "Riktig Svenska" by Wallenberg (I think). That would make it a one stop shop for using Swedish.

Swedish: An Essential Grammar (Routledge Grammars)
Published in Unknown Binding by Routledge (E) (August, 1997)
Average review score:

Finally, a comprehensive Swedish grammar.I have heard even Swedes complain that there is no readily available comprehensive grammar of the language. Now Routledge's "Comprehensive Grammar" series and their "Essential Grammar" series are filling niches long empty. The "Comprehensive" grammars, such as this one, are reference works for students who have some knowledge of the language and want full explanations of the main points as well as full lists of irregularities and explanations of the niceties of usage. This is information that no other Swedish book I know of provides.
The beginning student should consult the Foreign Service Institute's course, or Assimil's "Le suedois sans peine," or books and recordings offered by American universities, or perhaps Linguaphone's Swedish course. Use this comprehensive grammar as a supplement and as a reference for times when standard textbooks leave doubts.

The Tale Not Told
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (05 December, 2000)
Average review score:

Excellent twist on a classic literary character! As a Sherlock Holmes fan I wasn't sure if I'd like the angle of Sherlock Holmes actually being Charlotte Holmes. The author's
obvious knowledge of the character coupled with the ability to write in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, however, won me over.
The story is fascinating and the fact that Charlotte Holmes can pose as a woman as well as a man allows for a whole new array of plot possibilities. Couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next one!

Taylor's Guide to Fruits and Berries (Taylor's Guides to Gardening)
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (February, 1996)
Average review score:

Don't judge a book by its cover!Well, when the book first arrived, all I could think of were the types of books that were 'field guides to. . .' I actually considered sending it back as I thought it would be of little value--I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE MISTAKEN! While the book gives the appearance that it is pure textbook in style and format it was at least for me VERY informational, AND put together in a very readable format. There is an absolute wealth of technical information on berries and fruits but the book is also written so that even the most berry-less person (myself) can easily use the information. The book contains a great section on the care of berries and fruits with several chapters on pruning. It also lists the berries and fruits individually with a chapter devoted to each. The chapters all contain the same type of topics: overview, selection, care, disease, suggested cultivars for your zone, and anything unique about the cultivar. It is also very well photographed AND the illustrations are very helpful. I found it to be a valuable addition to my growing gardening library with a great deal of very practical advice!

Ten Years Beyond Baker Street: Sherlock Holmes Matches Wits With the Diabolical Dr. Fu Manchu
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (February, 1984)
Average review score:

A Joy For Mystery FansThe late Cay van Ash was head of the Department of Literature at Tokyo's prestigious Waseda University. He was also the author of an authorized biography of Sax Rohmer, MASTER OF VILLAINY. This is the second of van Ash's three novels (the first was published under a pseudonym in the 1940's) and it is a delightful recreation of the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Fu Manchu. The book fits seamlessly into the continuity of both HIS FINAL BOW and THE HAND OF FU MANCHU. Long-time readers of Conan Doyle and Rohmer will thrill to read how effortlessly van Ash revives these beloved characters. For anyone who has been disappointed with the portrayal of Holmes in countless pastiches, you can rest assured that van Ash recaptures the spirt and character of the original. Best of all, for Fu Manchu fans, van Ash leaves the door open for future authors to mine ideas from the opening of this wonderful literary re-creation.
